Traditionalism,
in its simplest definition means strict adherence to traditional methods,
styles and procedures. There’s the need to substitute the previous traditional
structural system with the up-to-date trends, systems and styles.
Over
time, Architecture in the mid-20th century particularly reflected brutalism; a
style whose features were not limited to the use of raw concrete as the chief
construction materials, thus forming striking repetitive angular geometries.
The adoption of the styles received supports and criticisms from various and
prominent architects around the globe. It was the basis for which structures
were constructed and some works made their way to being listed.
The
rejection of the old forms of architectural styles by those who felt the former
was outdated gave birth to modernism and Post-Modernism; a style mostly used
these days. By analysis and comparison, the later is far better than the former
perhaps on an aggregated ramification.
Generally, Nigeria architecture revolves around
traditional styles of design. ‘Traditional’ here does not translate to the use
of muds, stalks, bamboo. It emphasizes the adoption of the same pattern of
construction as far back as some decades. Talking of structural system, the major
maintains the post & Lintel system of construction, while, the minor
reflected otherwise.
Roof construction is also a building component which
has been configured and is vastly associated with a triangular system of joinery.
(with two fats columns underneath reflecting architectural brutalism). Doesn’t
that look archaic?
Traditionalism
in Nigeria Architecture
What
is the rationale for modernism to replace traditionalism in Nigeria’s
architectural design?
Some
of them are:
·
The building aesthetic
appealing effect is more communicated.
·
It eases construction
work, the structure looks simply, yet sophisticated.
·
It produces cost
efficient structure as clients want to achieve greater output with less
resources, time and effort.
·
It gives more room for
creativity

Architecture
as a discipline is dynamic and as such requires one to be innovative and think
outside the box. A work was posted to Reddit; an American social networking
forum by a Nigerian who wished to remain anonymous. It was a 3D design. The
comments received were far from encouraging. Why? because the design we do here
limits our thinking faculty. How do we compete with these guys globally? how does our architecture compete with
theirs?
You
should not confine your thinking to a certain direction because that was how it
was done or that is how it should be done. A lot of designs these days follows
the old pattern. Who says it can’t be done this way? Think, Think, Think!
